The Rhône-Alpes region regroups 8 departments: Ain, ardèche, Drôme, Isère, Loire, Rhône, Savoie and Haute-Savoie. The regional administrative town is Lyon and is also the largest city in the region. It is the second largest region in France in size (after Midi-Pyrénées), in economical importance and in population (after Île de France). It is also classified as the 6th most important European region. The Rhône-Alpes region represents roughly 1/10th of the French economy, of its demographics and of its size.
Lyon is situated in the South-East of France, at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône. It sits at an important geographical crossroad at the North of the natural corridor of the Rhône valley (that goes from Lyon to Marseille). Lyon has historically been an industrial city, home to many chemical and petro-chemical industries along the Saône and Rhône rivers. It is also the second largest student city in France, with 3 major Universities and many campuses and engineering scools. It is the third most populated city in France with 475 000 inhabitants.
8th OF DECEMBER
Every year on the 8th of December, the people of Lyon light up candles on their window ledges, in homage to the Virgin Mary, and then go outside to walk among the streets lit up by thousands of candles and full of original spectacle through the districts.
These illuminations constitute a strong tradition ingrained within the life of the city and attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
